Hi Kurt,

We have not started any formal obedience training with Gibson yet, but we (my husband and I) have been talking about it.  So far, for the most part, he behaves fairly well.  He is so large that he can jump up on the counter/table and try to grab things but if I tell him to get down, he will get down etc...  However, he gets VERY excited when he sees new people and jumps around, also, he doesn't have good leash manners (pulls).  These are things that we think obedience training will remedy.  He does mouth (not bite) on everything though, which I believe is a common thing in labs?  He won't bite but he will nibble/mouth at your hands sometimes, and I think obedience training will help with that too.  We have neutered him recently so since that is out of the way, perhaps obedience training will be our next step.

Hi Kurt,

Yeah, I have had a few people say that he looks like a lab/pitbull mix - including the vets office.  So, that's what I will assume at this point :)  I have attached another picture of his face where I think he looks more lab like, but the way he moves his ears and brow make me think that there is some pitbull in there.  I have no idea how many pitbulls are in Newfoundland, I have seen some, but not many.  Eventually I will post pics of Gibson to the gallery, including some little puppy ones :)  Although, even as a puppy, he was big :)

Hi Ashley, welcome to blacklabrador.com!  We are happy to have you here as a member.

Looking at your dog, it appears that you have a Pit Bull/Lab mix. Gibson definitely has a Pit Bull face. I didn't know there were that many Pit Bulls in Newfoundland.

I am glad to hear that you are enjoying Gibson. I had a problem like that one time with a German Shepard. She'd bring the ball back, but not drop it. So what I would do is when she wouldn't drop the ball for me I'd just turn my back on her and tell her "I'm not playing that game with you, drop it!" and eventually she learned that when she'd drop the ball I'd turn around and throw it again for her. It took a while for her to realize what I wanted but when she got it she'd bring the ball back and drop it for me each time.

Hi everyone.

My name is Ashley.  I joined this site because I want to chat with other people about black labs.  I have a black lab mix.   The mother was a yellow lab but the father, no one knows.  He could be 100% lab but most, including the vets office, don't think he is.  Of course, this doesn't matter to me because he is 100% awesome.  His name is Gibson.  He is 6 months old now and already 70 pounds.  He is built like a tank! lol.  He loves to run, and thankfully, I have a large backyard so we frequently go out there and run around together.  His favourite game is tug-of-war.  I will throw a toy, he will go retrieve it, but then, when he brings it back to me, instead of dropping it for me to throw it again, he wants me to play tug-of-war.   He is very affectionate and tries to play with every person, dog, and cat that he sees.   He is my best buddy :)

Anyway, I am supposed to write about myself in this forum I think.  Well, when I am not playing with Gibson, I like to read, exercise, play guitar and piano, draw, play board games, or just relax in front of the tv or computer.
