Debarking Dogs

08 March 2013 - 04:01 PM

I watched a documentary the other night about Dog Show dogs. The show started out in the back grooming area. The question asked was, "why is it so quiet"? Lots of dogs, not in the ring, shouldn't some be barking? Then the dirty secret came out. The show dogs are Debarked. I had never heard of this procedure. You can read about it on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia..../Devocalization  I was horrified. This type of vocal surgery is outlawed in the UK and only a small amount of vets will do it in the US. Westminister will never be the same for me to watch.

Then I did more research and read the stories of the dog lives saved by debarking. People that would have to euthanized the dogs due to excess barking. People that were facing  lawsuits or eviction because of barking dogs. The Shelties were mentioned most often as the most aggressive barkers. If not for this surgery many of the featured dogs would be dead.

Has anyone ever heard of this Devocalization? No one would want to do this to a treasured dog but what would happen to some dogs without this procedure? This one spins my head around...
