I just had my first session at PetsMart and they introduced clicker training and 'loading it' with a treat of some sort. Has anyone had success with these and am I going to be able to wing her off expecting treats at the sound of the clicker and respond obediently? Or should I be using a different training trick than this clicker?

Clicker training works via reward. Weaning can be a problem. The dog can get desensitised after you have weaned of the treats. It works on the same principle as the whistle. I prefer the whistle because you can get better effect over distance.
If you are using the clicker then i suggest that you always use treats. Make the treat special as well. Not just something you give the dog everyday. Cheese is my fave, for a special treat.
I would do the same thing as i suggested in the Whistle training thread, if your clicker training the dog yourself. The usage of a long line as well as the clicker.
Like i say i have seen dogs that are great on a clicker if used correctly.

If it looks like it works and it feels like it works
Then it works

Thanks for the input! I never thought of loading the clicker with something besides what I give her for treats every day for training. If this clicker training doesn't work, I might think of going to remote collar myself to see how that works!

Sasha went through Petsmart beginners class last fall. We trained her with a clicker and treats. I did not find it hard to wean her off of the clicker at all and we don't use that many treats either. I have trained Toby only with treats and now don't use that many with him. I think It all depends on the dog.

That photo is adorable! Does PetsMart give you that to take their picture with? Thanks for the input as well, I'm trying my best not to give her too many treats since I don't want her becoming used to them on a daily basis yet, here's to hoping my dog's one of the ones that is easily weanable!

They should give you the certificate of Achievement on the last day of class. I scanned the certificate, then overlaid it in the photo. Make sure you take your camera on the last day.

Thank you for the tip! I had no idea that they did that, I'm now even more excited for our last day of class.
