If you don't have any papers from the Canadian Kennel Club stating that your dog is a purebred, you are at the mercy of the luck of the draw. He may or may not be a purebred.
Do you know who the people are that had his litter? If so they may have the paperwork.
Usually dogs who are turned into shelters or from "backyard breeders" don't have the paperwork for the dogs.
As for your dog being listed as a Black Lab from the vet, the vet is going more on what type of group your dog belongs to rather than what he actually is. Your dog probably looks more like a black lab than anything else. Ir is not definitive proof that your dog is a black lab.
Even if you don't have the papers for your dog, it doesn't make him any less lovable. He will still love you the same as a full bred lab would if you take care of him properly. Usually kennel club paperwork is only needed if someone is going to breed their dog. And with so many labs in the shelters I don't know why anyone would want to do that.

Do you have a photo of your dog that you can upload?

I was only curious because people keep asking me whether or not he is. I got him when he was 1 from a family whose child was allergic to him so they had to find him a new home. You're right he is a very lovable dog who happens to be my daughters best friend. I couldn't ask for a better family dog. He is in this picture with my daughter.

And thank you for taking him in. Most dogs in that situation would have ended up in a shelter. By adopting him you prevented that from happening.
And thank you for putting up that photo. We all love photos here!
