Summer Heat Is Dangerous For Your Dog!

Here are some general tips for caring for your dog in high outdoor temperatures:

Never leave your dog in a parked car during the summer. You can literally bake them no matter how careful you think you are. Only take your dog in the car with you in the summer if you are going to places that have drive through windows, etc.
If you need to go somewhere where you need to leave your car, leave your dog at home.

When you do take your dog in the car with you double check upon your return that you have removed the dog from the car before entering your home.

Do not leave your dog outdoors for the entire day. Bring them inside between the hours of 11:00am-6:00pm.

Make sure they have plenty of water and shade for the times they are outside.

Limit playtimes to morning or late afternoon when there may be some shade in the play area.

Do not overwork your dog in this heat. For most labs when the temps climb over 88F(32C) limit playtime to 10-15 minutes max. It may be easier on your dog to go for a walk rather than a ball or Frisbee game.

If your dog gets very hot, make sure you have an indoor, air conditioned area for him/her that has a hard floor. A floor with a tile or stone surface is best. Dogs can't sweat like humans. The only areas they have to dissipate heat is their tongue and foot pads and the skin on their stomachs. Some people have their labs stomachs shaved in the summer to promote cooling.

Do not feed your dog for 90 minutes before or after an outdoor play time. When you come back in after a play time, it's better to give your dog ice cubes mixed with a little bit of water rather than just plain water. The last thing you want to do is fill their stomach as this could lead to a flipped stomach, or stomach torsion. This is a fatal condition unless you get the dog to a veterinarian fast! After about 45 minutes of ice & water you can give plain water again.

Emergency Care:
If your dog gets overheated, place them in the bathtub with cool (not cold) water for at least 15 minutes. Change the water once at the 10 minute interval with more cool water.
